Good afternoon all.
I’ve worried recently that those of you whom pre-ordered my new book, Travelogue 2 - a thousand days of longing, will be wondering about the production progress of your book.
As I mentioned in my last email, there was a production delay whilst we fixed an issue with the binding, where the level of glue used on the Swiss (open) binding was not quite right.
We are trying to find that perfect balance of enough to hold everything together as it needs, but not too much that it does not look or feel neat. You probably know by now my standards of production are very high, as I want to give the subjects of my books all that they deserve.
I had hoped this would be solved by now but further delays mean we are still not quite there.
Along with my printer we are having various options made by the binder that involve different amounts of glue being applied by hand over the open thread stitching.
Normally this binding is a part of a book never seen but as with my other recent books, (and an increasing amount of other photobooks these days), the books are being made with the open binding (so that the pages lay much flatter than normal) so the thread sewn spine and its bonding glue have to be visually perfect, as well as good to the touch.
I have another meeting with the printer first thing next week where we will see the latest variations and I really hope to then be able to come back to you soon after that.
Thank you as ever for your support, interest and most of all today, your patience.
Best wishes,
Marc
All good Marc, sounds like an interesting process. Would love to see some behind the scenes shots from your meetings at the printer. You should share them on Notes here.
Thanks Tom, Alexandre. I'm happy showing these things in person (or in teaching situations) but in public, online...less so. Whilst the conversation about it is, I hope, interesting, I only ever really want you all to see the work as it should be :)
