Amazing response...thank you
Or 'the joy of a zine'
“Wow”
“It’s beautiful”
“I love it”.
Some of the fantastic comments I have had to my first zine that I published last week.
With only 40 of this 1st edition of 150 copies left, I am so happy with the response I have had. My photobooks are by subject and design ‘weighty’ and I was worried that a zine might be seen as too different to my usual work, too ‘lightweight’ even. But I chose it as what I thought was an appropriate home for my photographs that are made whilst I am working on my major projects, the consequential images I make. (I’ve wanted to publish this hotel rooms series for a number of years but never felt I could find the right place for it.)
It's a very different process from the long form collaborative design of one of my books, which involve not only months of making but designers, copy editors, translators and hundreds of back and forth emails with printers, not too mention of course huge costs.
The zine is almost immediate. From concept through design to print in a matter of weeks, with no need for a Kickstarter campaign. The process still involves editing, sequencing, layout and proofing but it’s a much smaller team…just me and one other pair of eyes (Anna my wife) for me to ask advice from.
But it is this very immediacy that allows the zine perhaps it’s most powerful aspect, it’s accessibility through cost and ease of distribution.
I think I’ve got the bug…and am already planning more!
My best wishes as ever,
Marc
P.S. For those that have received their copy, have you spotted the self portrait yet?
